Contextual Studies
The unit aims to develop the learner’s study skills of research and visual language, together with the understanding of ‘formal elements.’ The learner will also be stimulated to learn how to produce an appropriate format to present all his/her findings in which one should include visual records and notes on the work studied.
Learners should study key art movements and design reforms, together with the key works by different artists, craftspeople and designers. This can include:
- how the work was made
- what the work was made from (2D and 3D)
- in which country the work was made and when
- identify style and motifs
- identify formal elements
- learn if the artists, craftspeople of designer is known or unknown
- identify influences
To achieve this unit you must: 1 Explore other people’s work and develop own response.
2 Understand how to produce effective research using both electronic sources and paper-based materials.
3 Present information about the work studied appropriately.
Since learner should understand how to produce effective research. One must use:
- electronic sources; including computer data, Internet and documentaries
- paper-based material such as book and magazines and leaflets
- learn what sort of picture to look for
- understand how to use what to find
3 Present information
Learners need to be taught how to present their research findings when producing written work. This involves:
- collect and arrange images appropriately
- write short notes about the work studied
- written notes extended in paragraphs where information on influences, media, techniques and formal elements should be included
- learn how to write bibliographies and other references
- display all the written information, pictures and researched material in a booklet, arch file, sketchbook or display file
Delivery of the unit:
General research task 1 file: 25th January till 1st March
Second Part of General research TAsk 2 (file and start task 3) 1st March till 12th April
Finish task 2 and 3 (Present Froup work) 12th April till 13th May
Negotiate Practitioner and start presentations 10th May till 24th May
